DOCTOR STRANGE 2 REVIEW!
Hello ladies and gentlemen, this is the Mystery Writer speaking, and welcome to my review of DOCTOR STRANGE INTO THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS! Beware of spoilers ahead! I know I tend to avoid spoilers, but considering I need to discuss particular plot points to give my full opinion, this is your only warning. Dr. Strange recuses a young woman named America Chavez who has the power to travel through the universe freely. Steven enlists the help of Wanda, aka The Scarlet Witch, but as it turns out, SHE'S the one that's after America! Why? To be with her boys that we saw in WandaVision! In every other universe, Wanda has her boys and is happy, so the Wanda of Universe 616 wants to take over the life of one of her alternate selves so she can have a family again. She attacks and destroys the citadel, and Strange and America escape to another universe, one ruled over by THE ILLUMINATI! The duo is stuck there because America can't control her powers, but this universe's Mordo captures them to bring them before THE ILLUMINATI! The other members of THE ILLUMINATI include Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four, Captain Carter, Captain Marvel, the Inhuman King, and Charles Xavier! THE ILLUMINATI isn't too keen to have another Dr. Strange in their universe, as their version died after causing two different alternate universes to collide with one another. After defeating their version of Thanos, Steven Strange is killed by the Inhuman King (I forget his name) because the evil book corrupted Strange while lying to the public about his heroic deeds. Meanwhile, Wanda finds the source of this book and discovers it's a throne made for her. Wanda takes over the body of her alternate self of the other universe and kills THE ILLUMINATI! Strange, America and the alternate Christine try to find the good book that is the opposite of the evil book, but Wanda chases and eventually catches up destroying it. Wanda captures America and flings Christine and Strange into yet another universe where an evil Dr. Strange is waiting with his copy of the evil book. Strange then takes over the corpse of the version of himself he buried earlier in the movie and battles Wanda along with Wong, inspiring America to take control of her powers! Wanda is then shown the error of her ways the hard way, and she destroys her mountain throne and every copy of the evil book. Meanwhile, Strange says goodbye to Christine, grows a third eye like the evil Strange, and begins a new adventure with some random lady that shows up in the mid-credit scene. Thoughts? I believe I went into a lot of detail and barely scratched the service, so allow me to list the things I loved and didn't love about the movie. Loved: The Acting: The performances from the entire cast were superb with Benedict Cumberbatch giving his best performance as the character of Dr. Steven Strange yet. The Special Effects: Some of the best in any Marvel movie to date. The Costumes: Some of the best in any Marvel movie since Shang-Chi. The Make-Up: The design and execution of the zombie Strange were amazing! The action; It's a Marvel movie; when does it not have great action? The humor: Excellent as always. The moral lessons: Borderline preachy, but overall great. Didn't Love: The Script: I felt like this was one of the weaker screenplays Marvel has released in a while. The main issue is that while a lot is going on in the movie, not a lot of it is fleshed up. For example, while we get to know America Chavez's background, we never got to know her as a character other than she needs saving, and she learns to stand up for herself. Story elements just felt unpolished and unexplored, like with THE ILLUMINATI, where they were just an extended cameo before being killed off by Wanda ten minutes later. If more time was spent refining the screenplay, this could have been the perfect Marvel movie, but as is, a lot of things were unexplored. The Overuse of Cheesy Imagery: This was weird to me, and made me flashback to a simpler time in superhero flicks. Seeing psychic waves coming out of Professor X was cool but cheesy. Not to mention, some of Sam Rami's classic horror movie tropes didn't fit in some places. The Plot was Predictable: We all knew how Wanda was going to be defeated, it wasn't rocket science. Overall, the movie was a flawed but enjoyable ride. It had a great cast of characters and an engaging yet flawed story with some impressive production design. I still felt like more could have been done with the story, as it felt like a generic Marvel sequel for me, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Total Score: 4.7 out of 5.0. Tempted to give it a lower score, but Bruce Cambell's cameo saved it. You can never go wrong with Bruce Cambell....
